From NEVA to mass production: success of electric passenger ships in Russia

12/17/2023

Ecovolt, the first electric catamaran made in Russia, was launched in St Petersburg.

Accommodating up to 60 passengers, the passenger ship can accelerate to 15 knots, while being almost silent.

This is the first experience in shipbuilding for Morsvyazavtomatika, which designs and manufactures ship panels, electrical equipment, laser and refrigeration equipment, switchboard housings and energy storage systems. Its success is due to the company's technological expertise and effective marketing.

The company unveiled its unique energy storage systems, ship control consoles and a full-size Ecovolt prototype at the international NEVA 2019 exhibition. At the event, the developer also announced other electric models, such as the Ecocruiser high-speed catamaran and the Cityvolt water taxi.

Today, Morsvyazavtomatika signed a contract to supply five Ecocruisers for a tourist boat company in St. Petersburg. Vodokhod, Russia's largest tourist shipping company, announced plans to acquire 15-20 electric vessels as well.
